The Problem of Whitewashing in Hollywood

This video was created as part of Brooklyn College's Media Activist Project with hopes of bringing attention to one of Hollywood's biggest problems: Whitewashing.

Whitewashing has been one of the most problematic practices in Hollywood. There are a number of different ways whitewashing has been practiced in Hollywood films. It can be the whitening through the casting of a character who was originally a person of color in historical or source material. It can also be the casting of a white actor to play a character of color and the use of makeup, acting, and other affectations, editing and narrative to draw on racial attributes – such a practice is often referred to as Yellow, Brown or Blackface. Whitewashing is problematic in that it removes the opportunity for a marginal group to be adequately represented to include culture, social experience, identity, and history.
